Rainbow Project

I have been a major bump on a log as mom recently. I have been so very tired both physically and emotionally and have kind of been in survival mode these past few weeks. I am sad to say no big projects or anything has been going on over here. Seriously...survival.

However my mom shared this site with me (http://www.learnplayimagine.com/2014/02/rainbow-eruptions.html?m=1)
and today I found the energy to try it. I am so very glad I did!!!

I did the bottom activity with baking soda, vinegar and food coloring.

The prep time was very little and the mess was minimal BUT my kids seriously loved it and played for over an hour with it.

So first after talking with my mom we decided the easiest and cleanest way to  execute this was by using muffin tins on top of a cookie sheet to help catch the overflow (which worked brilliantly).

I then added different colors in each space with a few drops of food coloring.

Then I covered it with some baking soda. So the color will be covered and it can be a fun surprise!

I then found some squeeze bottles the kids had and filled them with white vinegar.

So I am super crazy about surprises and wanted my kids to be totally surprised by what was going to happen so I didn't let them see any part of what I was doing. I then put an old towel on the table to help catch any other over flows and let the activity go!

Side note: be prepared to go through a fair amount of vinegar. I was glad I had plenty. But the kids got creative when I no longer filled their bottles up so don't let that stop you!

At first it just fizzed white...

Then the colors showed through!!!

PURE MAGIC!!!

Oh what fun!!! I got some spoons and medicine droppers out and that extended their play and gave them some new skills to learn.

Seriously DO this with your kids. It was so fun!!!

  1. It does look fun! We did a version of this awhile back where gave them a 9x13 pan with a layer of baking soda and then mixed the vinegar and food coloring in the muffin tins and they used eye droppers to make spots/volcanoes and mix colors in the pan... We will have to try it this way! :) I hope you are doing well and get some energy back! :)
